Hey y'all!

I'm Tammy, the teacher behind Tarheelstate Teacher and a passionate advocate for upper elementary classrooms where both teachers and students can thrive!

Because let's be honest — upper elementary teaching is genuinely challenging work. When you are juggling differentiation for multiple subject areas, trying to make math and science hands-on, and trying to build a classroom community where kids actually care about each other–all while attending staff meetings and taking on extra responsibilities that you *were* super excited about–it's so easy to feel like you're falling short of the teacher you want to be in your head... something's gotta give if you're going to keep doing this thing!

Feeling Like You’re Teaching with Your Hair on Fire Most Days? 😦

(I’ve SO Been There…)

You’re absolutely in the right place if:

  • You spend way too many nights and weekends piecing together resources from all corners of the internet (hello, 27 open TPT tabs!) just to feel prepared for Monday
  • You’ve tried the one-size-fits-all spelling approach, but deep down, you know some kids are bored while others are completely lost OR you feel guilty because you don’t teach spelling at.all. AND YOU KNOW YOUR STUDENTS NEED IT
  • Your social emotional learning lessons feel disconnected — like you’re just checking an SEL box without building any long-lasting positive behavior skills or classroom community
  • The Sunday blues hit EARLIER and EARLIER because your brain tells you you’re not ready for the week ahead
  • You want to differentiate your instruction but feel overwhelmed by what that actually looks like in practice
  • You’re tired of planning under pressure week after week and dream of having organized, systematic approaches that actually WORK and save you time

From Figuring it out as You Go to Systems that Create Freedom

(without losing our minds)

When I first started teaching, I thought being a “good teacher” meant creating everything from scratch and spending every weekend planning. I’d stay up until midnight cutting out materials, searching for activities, and trying to piece together something that resembled a cohesive plan. To be honest, I was living my dream of being a teacher–but I didn’t know this wasn’t sustainable and would eventually lead to burn out.

Fast forward through years of trial and error, countless cups of coffee, and some serious reflection… and I realized something game-changing: To be a good teacher, I didn’t need more hours in the day, I needed SYSTEMS that worked day after day and saved me mental space.

I became obsessed with creating structures that would allow me to differentiate effectively without losing my mind.

  • I developed a word study approach that let me manage 4-6 small groups with students working independently (and made measurable growth!) while not in a group with me.
  • I built cohesive, engaging morning meeting units that teach social-emotional learning skills and create genuine classroom community–after grabbing a few picture books, my plans were printed and ready to go.
  • I implemented a 3-day math station routine that allowed for gap-filling, enrichment, and small groups.

These systems transformed my classroom from chaos to confidence — and more importantly, my students went from struggling with spelling to mastering patterns, from bickering to looking out for each other.

The difference? I stopped piecing together flashy activities and started implementing systems and routines that allowed me to use my teaching skills to best meet every student exactly where they were.

My “Secret Sauce” for Changing Your Teaching Experience

Here’s the thing about my approach that’s different: I don’t believe in quick fixes or cute activities that don’t actually solve problems. (Sorry, but downloading that one cute worksheet isn’t going to fix your spelling instruction!)

Instead, I focus on creating teaching systems that:

  • Replace Monday-Friday routines with cyclical approaches that give students the time they actually need for mastery AND work even with a not-so-consistent schedule
  • Transform spelling from memorization to pattern recognition through targeted, differentiated word study
  • Build genuine classroom community through multi-week SEL units (not one-and-done character lessons that never stick)
  • Create independent student routines that free you up for small group instruction where the real magic happens
  • Eliminate that flying by the seat of your pants feeling with complete, ready-to-use frameworks that connect day-to-day learning

I hope my resources make you say, “This is so perfect. It’s exactly what I need for the way I want to teach!”

Meet the PB + Chocolate-Loving Teacher Behind the Resources

When I’m not designing word study games or mapping out SEL units, you’ll find me running my daughters to dance, tennis, or whatever new activity they’ve decided to try, choosing a new restaurant for date-night, or planning our next beach trip! I’m a total Monica Geller type (I love to think in terms of systems that save us time in the future 🙌). I can talk about my passion for differentiated learning and pattern-based spelling instruction for HOURS.

I’m also deeply passionate about helping teachers have a life outside of the classroom. Because you deserve to be a teacher while filling ALL the cups of your own soul, too! Weekends should be your time to disconnect–not find you deep in lesson planning and laminating.

And while my teacher-heart beats for well-designed systems and organized classrooms, I’m also a firm believer that creating real connections with your students is what makes this profession worth it. That’s why I’m so passionate about designing SEL resources that help you build genuine community, not just manage behavior.
